Term 1: Week 5 Update

It's wonderful to see the students be very creative and resourceful with their home learning. The book covers students produced demonstrate an abundance in imaginative thinking and design ideas. Thank you very much for supporting your child in their efforts. Could I ask you to sign the home learning grid, too.

This week's home learning includes time for students to start drafting their Graduation Diploma Design Brief Template as well as their letter to Mr Scott that explains their proposed project and community service ideas. We discussed it together in class and looked at a number of examples. The templates are on p.9 and p.10 in the Diploma Handbook. Students are encouraged to ask questions and seek guidance if they are unsure.

In Science, students were introduced to a new resource called 'Education Perfect', in which they have two online modules to complete. They commenced these in class this afternoon and they should be able to continue at home. It is accessible through SLIK and the icon looks as follows:

Last Friday, we celebrated the induction of our school leaders and here are some photos I took at the Assembly. We have also been enjoying the flexible learning spaces that our classroom offers.

Have a great week!

Home Learning Grid - Term 1 Week 5-6

Spanish in Year 6

¡Hola querida comunidad escolar!

Me llamo Señorita Lopez, I am one of the Spanish teachers at St Luke’s and I will be doing the first term of Spanish with some of the students. It is always an exciting time to learn Spanish so get ready to have a party in your mouths and say things like ‘me gustan mucho las enchiladas!’ or ‘queremos hacer una fiesta!’
This first term of Español at St Luke’s we will be immersing students in the spoken and written language. Students will learn how to greet each other and introduce themselves and their family members. They will also learn how to express nationality, likes and dislikes, and a whole new set of new vocabulary that will have their mouths doing linguistic Zumba!
Please be ready to be surprised by your kids with new fun words in Spanish like ‘Pequeñito’, ‘fantastico’, ‘maravilloso’, ‘estupendo’, ‘chiquito’ and more. Watch out for them saying things like ‘Hola, ¿como estas? Or ‘¡arriba!’ or ‘me llamo Pedro’ when they get picked up from school. Make sure you reply back with a friendly ‘hola’ and a smile to encourage them to use their new vocabulary.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Term 1: Week 3 Update

Congratulations to the House Captains for using their imagining and collaboration skills to quickly and efficiently compose an original house chant with their Dee Why counterparts and then teach it to their house team members. This all happened in a short space of time. The chants sounded amazing and congratulations to Dawes for the winning chant and Greenway for a close second. Macarthur was the winning house for the swimming carnival this year. Chisholm's chant was very energetic, too.

The leaders are doing a fabulous job in their various roles in Assembly. Well done to Ella and Lily for their first presentation of the Music Awards. Jamie, Ben M, Tom, Gus, Liberty and Harper P did a fabulous job in their first HOT SEAT for 2020. Being in the limelight can feel uncomfortable and but they showed courage and humility in fulfilling their parts and answering questions which were slightly different from last year. Lily was the Year 6 Kindness Shoutout for the week (as voted by students).

This week students have also been busy building their field knowledge on Cambodia to provide a context around the setting in the novel Little Brother by Allan Baillie. They collaborated in groups of 3 to divide the task and presented their findings in Google Slides. We are creating a display wall using their information including some statistics, a timeline and images relating to the novel. The novel study activities will commence next week.

We have also started our Geography Unit: A Diverse and Connected World - The Mystery of Asia. As we tapped into our prior knowledge and understanding of continents and countries, students wondered where the border lay between Europe and Asia. This is a great start point to the inquiry process. Geography lessons are integrated with Information Services (Library) with Miss Willis.

In Art with Mrs Hall, students are learning how to create a portrait using Picasso cubism techniques.

I invited Mrs Ruiz in as a guest and expert speaker this afternoon to talk to the students about the Graduation Diploma. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to ask questions and share their ideas. It was also very encouraging that many students have already started to think about their major project. I will touch base with each student over the coming weeks to discuss their ideas for the project and community service.

Students need to bring a draft print out of their Personal Learning Goals on Monday so that I can give them some feedback before the due date. Have a wonderful weekend!

Year 6 Graduation Diploma Handbook 2020

Year 6 Camp - Lake Macquarie

Wow! Our camp at Lake Macquarie last week was absolutely fantastic. We were so fortunate that the weather held up for all students to enjoy the main outdoor activities planned by the Cru Leaders. We arrived in high spirits and the enthusiasm and joy was visible on the students' faces throughout the 3-days at camp. They showed tremendous resilience as they developed their canoeing, sailing, rock climbing and initiative games skills. Students were very kind to one another and lending a helping hand where needed. We also had lots of fun when the rain did set in on Friday. The Cru Leaders provided lots of active and fun alternative games and activities under cover. Students also benefited greatly from the daily Christian reflection time during which they had opportunities to learn and discuss more about God's amazing work. Enjoy!
