Term 1 Week 7 - Ice Cream and Salt!

Here are some photos of our very successful first fundraising event this morning. Ice Cream Day was very popular with the students. A big thank you to Cara Morgan and her team for all their organisation and helping to make this event a success. Well done to all Year 6 students for fulfilling their roles as fund collectors, line directors, cone managers, champion scoopers, and topping specialists.

We also have photos of students immersed in their Salt Water Investigation. This investigation requires multiple working scientifically skills to plan, set up, implement the experiment as well as collect accurate quantitative and qualitative data, graphing the data, comparing the data and making predictions and conclusions.

Term 1 Week 7 Update

Last week the students did a survey to find out the most popular ice-cream flavours at St Luke's Bayview. It was great to see the students each take on a role and conduct the survey with professionalism.

Tomorrow (Tuesday 10.3) we welcome Miss Olivia Ellem to Year 6. Miss Ellem is from Macquarie University completing her final year of the Bachelor of Education. She will undertake her Professional Experience during Term 1 and Term 3 in Year 6.

We are also ready to set up our Science Experiment to see the effect of different concentrations of salt water on ice berg lettuce plants. It is surprising how much detailed planning goes into such an experiment to make it a fair test, when at first glance it seems relatively simple.

The home learning has been posted separately. Digital copies of the Graduation Diploma handbook and an editable MS Word document for the Design Brief template has now been uploaded onto Canvas - check Year 6 Files. An example Design Brief is also uploaded onto Canvas for students to use as a guide.

Remember our Ice Cream Day Fundraising event on Thursday 12 March at recess on the Valley. Students can purchase a delicious ice cream cone for just $2. Yum!

I wish you all a productive week.

Happy Week 6!

Last week the students collaborated in pairs to create a Maths video tutorial to explain the difference between prime and composite numbers. They were very engaged in the task and enjoyed showing off not only their knowledge but also their video recording and editing skills. This week we are learning about Integers - the set of all positive and negative whole numbers, comparing and solving problems that relate to the real world.

In Science, we have started to design an experiment to test the effect of different salt solutions on a plant. On Monday, students revised the steps in the Scientific Inquiry Process. In particular, we jointly constructed a testable question and an hypothesis that we could prove or disprove using a Fair Test experiment. We will also look further into the rising salt levels in Australia and how this impacts sustainable farming.

Our first fundraiser of the year kicks off next week on Thursday 12 March. Ice Cream Day will be a welcoming cool treat at recess. The students are commended for their passionate presentations on a range of different charities. Happy Days is the charity we will support with our fundraising efforts this year.

We've also been focusing on developing our skills in creating expanded noun groups to help us become more descriptive writers! A work in progress...
